An old domain, a new site in one afternoon: how we brought rudolf.pl back before Christmas

Every company that has been online for more than a few years has a drawer full of domains from old projects. Renewed every year, needed by nobody, sometimes with history and links everyone has forgotten about. One of ours is rudolf.pl. In 2009 it ran a gift shop and penny auctions, where before Christmas people bid on presents at 20 grosze per bid. Later the domain sat for years on a list of domains for sale.

With two months to go until Christmas, a reindeer in the name was begging for a second life. We wanted to see how long the road from an idea to a page Google can index really takes. It took one afternoon.

Archive first, idea second

Before building anything we looked at the Web Archive. A domain's history suggests the topic and shows whether it drags anything unwanted behind it, such as spam or dubious links. Rudolf had a clean past and a clear theme: gifts. So the new site goes back to its roots, only instead of auctions it offers gift ideas for specific people, a budget filter, a countdown to St Nicholas Day and Christmas Eve, and a calendar of when to order before the holidays.

One thing that brings people in: the draw

A page of tips alone is not enough to make anyone come back. So we added a Secret Santa draw, a tool many people look for every year: who buys a present for whom in the family or at work. You type the names, exclude pairs who should not draw each other, and everyone gets their own link with the result.

What the tool does not do mattered more than its features. It does not store names, send emails or keep a database. The draw happens in the browser and the result is encoded in the part of the link after the # sign, which the browser never sends to the server. There is nothing to steal and nothing to look after under GDPR. Before showing the site to anyone we clicked through the draw with an automated test on the live domain, including the mobile view.

SEO and GEO from day one, not "some day"

Seasonal sites have one problem: if Google finds them in December, the season is already over. So everything that helps in search went in straight away:

  • titles and descriptions written for specific queries,
  • a sharing image, so a link on Facebook or LinkedIn is not empty,
  • structured data: FAQ, a list of ideas, an application description and step-by-step instructions,
  • llms.txt describing the site for AI assistants, plus sitemap.xml and robots.txt generated by the CMS,
  • Google Search Console verification and a submitted sitemap.

The domain: without touching email

The riskiest part of an operation like this is DNS, because it is easy to switch off someone's email by accident. The domain had MX, SPF and DMARC records. First we pointed only the website at the CMS server, then moved the zone to Cloudflare, copying the mail records unchanged. The site stayed up the whole time and email did not even notice.

When a quick project like this makes sense

A site built in one afternoon will not replace a large service, but it works well in a few situations: a seasonal campaign, testing an idea before a bigger investment, a landing page for a campaign, or an old domain that could start collecting traffic instead of just costing money. There is one condition: do it properly from the start, with content that gives people something and with everything search engines need.

You can see the result at rudolf.pl (in Polish). And if you also have a domain waiting for better times, get in touch.
